CAD CAM Internship with Northrop Grumman (Gold)
-
Main focus was on utilizing NX, the CAD software used in the EEDS department at Northrop, to develop and model aircraft parts for different customers.
-
This resulted in me completing about 4 parts that were logged into their PLM (Product Life cycle Management) system so they could be tested later on in their development.
-
-
The internship was held online and they sent me all necessary equipment to carry out my job as an intern.
-
This was a paid internship, and I worked for approximately 11 weeks under the typical 40 hour work week schedule.
-
After completing the 4 parts previously mentioned, I was tasked, along side another intern, to find a way to reduce the process of running system checks against large batches of parts designed by the Northrop engineers for official approval.
-
Our work on this project lasted up until the end of the internship, and it resulted in us reducing the previously 2 day task, to approximately 1-2 hours.
-
Our managers emphasize the importance that time saving processes have for a company like Northrop, and that what we accomplished was significant in saving time and resources

Reflection:
I want to start but saying thank you to the support and mentorship from my teachers at UMBC. The guidance I have received from Dr. Panos and so many more faculty and staff allowed me to comfortably transition into this internship opportunity. I never felt uneasy jumping into this professional climate at Northrop, even in an online setting, because of the preparation done in and out of the classroom with the Mechanical Engineering department at UMBC.
The opportunity at NGC gave me in depth experiences with modeling in a new CAD software (NX), and give me an idea as to how working as a professional design engineer would go at a company like Northrop. Throughout my time there this summer, I was able to make several networking connections for future positions and opportunities, present my work on the system check project to the whole department, and I gained quality insight as to how I should go about higher level education and job opportunities later in my career. Overall, it was such an amazing experience, and I am really excited about the possibility of returning to Northrop this summer!
